Get the Look - Japandi With A Twist

Japandi style is the fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese design. While geographically distant, their design aesthetics are closer than you’d think. Both focus on minimalism and natural elements. While this is a relatively new design trend, we’re seeing more and more clients attracted to its elegant simplicity and calming atmosphere.

As you browse the before and after photos, you’ll see that we replaced some of the square angles in the home’s architecture for soft archways. We also gave the entire home a fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Snowbound which was a much-needed upgrade from the yellowish color previously used. Paint is incredibly transformative and there’s no way we could have achieved this light and airy feel without it! This project was such a joy to work on as it was our client’s first remodel experience AND something they had been dreaming about completing since welcoming their first child about a year ago. Helping create people’s dream spaces is the most rewarding part of our job!

The Primary Bathroom

These first-time parents wanted to create a sanctuary in their home, a place to retreat and enjoy some self-care after a long day. Curating a blend of warm and cool tones was incredibly important to this design as we wanted this space to feel balanced and calming. Pairing a cool, gray tile with warm wood tones was just one of the ways we achieved that goal.

Materials that made the space:

In this space, the existing archway already lent itself to the overall design so it didn’t need a big architectural overhaul, just material upgrades. We found this gorgeous tile that looks like thin wooden slats that embodies the minimal, natural aesthetic of Japandi style. Our client didn’t want to take the tile all the way to the ceiling so we did a demi-surround and love how light and airy it feels with this choice!

Transitioning the porcelain hex tile into this multi-colored pebble tile under the bathtub adds a spa-like, earthy aesthetic and helps tie the entire color palette together.

The Powder Room

Here’s where the twist comes in!

When clients want to get adventurous with their design but not do it in a large, communal space, we recommend the powder room. Since the powder room is primarily used by guests it’s the perfect place to go bold! We like to think of it as the jewel box of the home, a dazzling display of playfulness and personality.

Although this is not the true Japandi aesthetic, we still incorporated Japandi design elements, like the arched mirror, natural wood and clean lines.

The Living Room

This space wasn’t originally part of the plan, but after seeing the renderings for the other spaces, our clients quickly realized that if they didn’t update the living room, it would look extra outdated against the rest of the remodeled home.

The first thing that needed to be done was centering the fireplace, which was also the perfect time to upgrade it from gas to electric to meet CA’s upcoming new building codes. We wanted to add a splash of color, so we selected these beautiful hand-printed tiles that each have their own nature-inspired imprint, which beautifully illustrates the overall Japandi aesthetic. We kept the arched theme going and designed these gorgeous built-ins that feature custom cabinets and floating shelves (this is a bonus of working with a great contractor!)
